Giyani- Ngove Leads were crowned Mayors Cup 2017 Champions after they thrashed their Village rivals Ngove Maspala 2-0 in the final at Giyani Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The match got off to a lovely start with both teams playing at a high tempo trying to get scores as soon as they can. Both sides did try to create chances to score from the start but seemingly it was not easy for both to score.

However, Leads FC strikers managed to manoeuvre through Maspala’s defence to create chance for themselves and scored their first goal in the first half.
Maspala strikers tried by all means to equalise but chances were hard to come by.

The mood changed when Leads scored their second goal further putting pressure on their rivals and making it hard for them to concentrate on equalising. Things got a bit ugly minutes after the second goal when Maspala supporters started throwing cans and bottles into the pitch resulting in the match being halted for few minutes but security personnel managed to calm them down and the match continued.

The Giyani stadium which was nearly packed to its full capacity was also filed with big sounds of Vuvuzelas as the champions were officially crowned the victors of the tournament. They received a sum of R22 000, a trophy and gold medals.

Ngove Maspala FC as runner ups received a sum of R17 000 and silver medals. Gawula Classic got position 3 after rolling a team from Nkuri village.

It turned into a very joyous moment for Leads supporters as players ran around the pitch lifting high the trophy and medals while others were taking pictures with PSL player Justice ‘Sorry’ Chabalala for Orlando Pirates FC and Wiseman ‘Madlaya’ Maluleke for NFD’s Jomo Cosmos FC.

The finals were graced by the presence of the Greater Giyani Municipality Cllr Sasavona Mathebula flanked by GGM council members and officials. They handed over the cheque and the trophy to the Winners as they posed for pictures.
