Hoedspruit- Five men between 26 and 52 of age were arrested in Hoedspruit outside Phalaborwa on Monday (24 July 2017) evening.

The group was arrested after community members around the areas tipped Police about an endangered species they were transporting along Hoedspruit-Acornhoek road.

Provincial Police spokesperson Lt Col Maontshe Ngoepe said Police received information about a vehicle travelling from Acornhoek in Mpumalanga Province enroute to Hoedspruit transporting a Pangolin and reacted swiftly.

“The alleged car was spotted on the same road and pulled off, it was searched and one live Pangolin was recovered”, Ngoepe said

He said suspects are from different places in Limpopo Province such as Malamulele, Lulekani in Phalaborwa and Tzaneen.

The Pangolin was taken to an animal enclosure in Hoedspruit immediately.

The suspects will appear before Hoedspruit Magistrate Court on Wednesday(26 July 2017) facing charges of possession of protected species.

“Police investigations are still continuing”, added Ngoepe.
