More than a hundred Thulamela local municipality employees participated in a wellness day event organised by the municipality on Friday, 18 August 2017. During the event employees took part in various sporting activities, including fun walk, soccer, aerobics and dancing.

Thulamela mayor Mr Avhashoni Tshifhango encouraged municipal employees to exercise and live healthy lifestyles in order to be more productive. Speaking at the Thohoyandou stadium, Tshifhango said exercise is very important because ‘a healthy body helps the mind to make good decisions at work’.

 “An unhealthy employee is not productive and does not often make employers happy. Hence as the municipality we are always encouraging everyone to exercise, eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle. We need to lead by example and encourage each other to exercise regularly”, Tshifhango said. He further said: “I know that most of you do not even walk to the shops but you drive, no matter how near the shop is situated. It’s about time we start to walk more and avoid using our vehicles unnecessarily. Walking is another form of exercise and it is free as you do not have to pay first in order to walk”.

In a bid to encourage its employees to exercise, the Thulamela municipality has since declared Wednesday as a Sports Day in order for all its employees to participate in wellness activities.

Tshifhango also took the opportunity to announce that the municipality will be hosting an annual show from 31 August to 2 September this year.

“A healthy person has got a vision, hence I am leading by example as I exercise regularly”, he added.

“From today I am going to make time for myself to exercise and eat healthy food. I have gained lot of weight during the winter period, as I was eating fat cakes on a daily basis even though I know that it’s not healthy”, said Mpho Munyai one of the participants in the wellness acivities. People in attendance were also given tips on how to exercise by themselves at home.
