At least three (3) houses were burnt to ashes on Tuesday (today) afternoon at Blinkwater village outside Giyani.

It is alleged that a group of community members went on rampage, hunting down the suspects in the murder of 24 year old Nyiko Nathiel Makhubele, a taxi driver from Blinkwater village who was shot dead last week.

Provincial police spokesperson LT. Colonel Moatshe’ Ngoepe said a three roomed house ,a four roomed house and one rondawell house, belonging to different families were burnt to ashes.

“During the incident, there were no injuries or fatalities and the estimated damage caused is estimated at more than R100 000.00”, Ngoepe said.

The SAPS Provincial Commissioner LT. General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incidents of public violence in the strongest terms.

“Members of the community must stop taking the law into their own hands but if they have information about any suspected person involved in crime, they may contact the Police rather than to engage in this heinous acts which is totally uncalled for”, said General Ledwaba.

“The Public order Police members have since been deployed in the area to monitor the situation. Cases of public violence and arson were opened, the suspects involved are still unknown and there is no arrest”, Ngoepe added.

“The Police investigations are continuing”, he concluded.
