GIYANI- Blessing Martin Mabunda (28), the Bambeni villager (outside Giyani) is not your typical lad, but he is already a media GURU whose stardom continues to illuminate brighter, making him the most revered role model among his peers!
He is the visionary and originator of Giyani View newspaper, Kuvoninga Media and Kuvoninga Projects. He is currently the sub editor of Giyani View and former Energy FM updates reporter, Phalaborwa FM news reporter & DJ, Alex FM news reporter and DJ. He now shares his print and electronic media experiences. He believes one doesn’t have to have white beads to become experienced!
Da Bles piano as he was affectionately known during his radio DJing days holds Diploma in Media studies, National certificate in Journalism and FET certificate in Advertising.
He began his career at the age of 21 when he joined Greater Alex Today newspaper in 2010 as an intern. “I hated print media because I used to believe that the package doesn’t come with fame, and I wanted fame, not career,” laughs Mabunda.
“I thank God because the best in me was realised through print and electronic media. I was a fast learner at Greater Alex Today, before I joined Alex FM in 2012,” he recalls.
Mabunda had always been addicted to learning new things. In 2014 October he joined Phalaborwa FM (PFM) as a news reader. Later in the year, he was reshuffled to a DJ and hosted the most-listened afternoon drive show.
He also hosted a morning Saturday show- Bumpa to Bumpa. But the Sunday gospel show he hosted, ‘Nnamangwaloareng’, was closer to his heart, as he is a Christian. The show spoke about what the bible scripts were saying. On current affairs programme, he stood by as a host.
Mabunda’s commentary (with Sipho Chauke) broke the record during the MTN 8 final live coverage between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in 2014.
“What we did it was something that would last forever in my mind because it is history of the South African Community Radio stations which we never had before and PFM did it. The move proved to everyone that I’m a jack of all trade,” Mabunda exaggerated.
In 2015 he joined Energy FM as news reporter and in 2016 he joined Limpopolian Newspaper as a freelancer Journalist. He described his journey as one of the best thing ever happened to him through hardships and laughter which he came across.
“I thought I had arrived when I joined Energy FM but to cut the story short the experience, the level of treatment by the management I went through, was worse in my career. But trust me, I thank God because the move has taught me a lot and today I’m a Media- entrepreneur at the age of 28,” Mabunda shared.
Mabunda is married to California Mchavi, the HR and Admin manager of Kuvoninga Media, mother body to Giyani View. They’re blessed with a son, Khanimambo.
