GIYANI – The service delivery protest by residents of Xikukwani, Xivulani, Mavalani, Mbatlo, Bonwani and Nwadzekudzeku ended unpleasantly when police officers shot and wounded two protesters apparently with live ammunitions on the 28th of November 2017.

During the demonstration, the R81 road between Giyani and Malamulele was blocked unruly protesters. The furious residents are demanding the services that are allegedly due to be delivered to them by the government as promised back in the years.
They alleged they had been promised clean water supply, electrification of some extensions and also roads and infrastructure, but said the government seemed to have forgotten those promises.

Some villages were no- go- areas and some foreign hawkers said that they felt intimidated and couldn’t operate due to the protest.

According to the Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the R81 road was cleared on the night of Tuesday by the Public Order Police after all the drama ended.

Ngoepe said the case of public violence was opened against those protesters and arrest will be made soon.

“Two cases were opened by some protesters on allegations that they were shot at by the police and those cases are being taken over by the IPID for further investigations,” Said Ngoepe

He indicated the situation still being monitored by the Public Order Police.
