A 33-year-old man appeared in the Seshego District Court after he was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend at Bergzicht village, Mashashane area, police said on Tuesday.

Constable Maphure Manamela said Opheny Machaba was arrested on Monday 22 January 2018 in Seshego precinct at one of the local pastor’s house.



“He (the suspect) was being sought by the police for the murder of his 24- year-old girlfriend Itumeleng Betha which occurred on 1 August 2017.The suspect allegedly entered his girlfriend’s home, strangled her, put a sofa on top of her before burning her lifeless body.

“The neighbours saw a smoke coming out of the house and went to assist but were shocked to find the deceased already dead and burnt.” She said.

Manamela, confirmed that the neighbours alerted the police who reacted swiftly, but the suspect had already fled the scene and has since been on the run until his arrest.

“The suspect’s case was postponed until 09 February 2018 for formal bail application however police investigations are still continuing.” She said.

The Provincial Commissioner Lt General Nneke Ledwaba applauded all the members involved for their sterling work and dedication. “This should serve as a clear message that no one can stop the strong arm of the law and I hope this will give comfort to the family of the victim,” Ledwaba concluded.
