Giyani – Eight alleged illegal miners Masingita Maluleke, Linah Makhuvele, Sanieta Sithole, Paulos Maluleke, Samuel Seshoka, Busani Nkuna, Raolinah Mbombi, Linah Matwasa were remanded in custody until 21 September 2018 for profiling and formal bail application.

This emerged after the zama-zamas were arrested by a joint operation led by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence, Public Order Police and Department of Mineral Resources at Ellerton – a rehabilitated mine at Hlaniki village on Friday.

Limpopo Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke said almost 89 bags of gold bearing material were seized during the operation.

The operation comes hot off the heels of two similar operations conducted in March, and May this year,  where about 45 suspects were arrested for alleged illegal mining, and for unlawful possession of unwrought precious metal, added Maluleke.

“The eight suspects between the age of 26 and 60 have appeared at Giyani Magistrate Court on Monday for contravening the Precious Metal Act 37 of 2005 Section 4, illegal mining and unlawful possession of unwrought metal”, concluded Maluleke.
