Giyani- Nsuku Mhlongo, (6) has died after falling into a trench which was allegedly left by the contractors at Homu 14B in the outskirts of Giyani.
The incident occurred on Saturday while he was playing with his friends. The trench was left open by Khato Civils two years ago when it was contracted to lay pipes in and around Giyani by Mopani District Municipality and Department of Water and Sanitation.
The lifeless body was retrieved by his father and community members late on Saturday.
Mopani District Municipality Spokesperson Witness Tiva has expressed condolences to the Mhlongo family and said they are engaging with the Department of Water and Sanitation and Lepelle Northern Water to make sure that all pits left by the contractor are closed and secured.
“As the Mopani District Municipality we will be engaging the Department of Water and Sanitation and Lepelle Northern Water to see to it that all trenches that have been left open by the contractor are properly covered and secured to avoid the recurrence of the incident, as the project in question belongs to the national Department of Water and Sanitation.
“We are continuing to keep the family in our thoughts, prayers during this trying time”, he Concluded.
